With my love for all things digital, I’ll be the first to admit that hopping on the treadmill or lifting some weights isn’t the first thing on my agenda. And being newly engaged, I’m making a point to work on my fitness before the day sneaks up on me. But I have to be honest, the whole treadmill thing is getting a little stale for me. However, cardio seems to be an essential element to staying in shape. So after doing a bit of research, I’ve come up with a few unique ideas that are actually fun and keep you physically active at the same time. Not an easy feat, I’ll admit. Here are a few of my favorites that I may try my luck at:
You don’t have to be Derek Jeter to reap the physical benefits baseball has to offer. Try getting a quick game together with friends. Running the bases and pitching improves your cardiovascular endurance and works to strengthen your arms. Everyday Health said that playing just 30 minutes of America’s favorite pastime can burn about 170 calories. If you play all nine innings, you may be looking at up to 765 calories burned. You won’t even realize you’re working out with all the fun you’re having, especially if you spend your time on the bench making fun of your fellow teammate’s less-than-professional swing and enjoying a little friendly competition. Nothing like competition to get your heart racing!
Alright, this one I will definitely be trying. Hopefully my hand-eye coordination will be up to par. There are so many video games on the market that work to get users off the couch. According to Everyday Health, a few of the most popular are Dance Dance Revolution, Nintendo Wii, Wii Fit and Dancetown. Even if your moves aren’t Dancing With the Stars-worthy, you’ll still be getting a workout just by trying. A favorite of mine is Wii Boxing – I can virtually knock out my friends and burn about 216 calories in 30 minutes.
I can’t be the only one who remembers the childhood days of jumping on the trampoline for hours on end. If you weren’t lucky enough to own one, hopefully you were friends with the cool kid in the neighborhood who did. Turns out, jumping on one of these is a great way to get in shape. There are so many more benefits than I realized. You can burn fat, tone muscles and improve your endurance all at the same time. And who doesn’t have fun bouncing on a trampoline?
